Sideways (DVD) Review
Nominated for five Oscars and winner of Best Screenplay adapted from an outside source, Sideways was proved to be a surprise success 2004. Based on Rex Pickett's novel of the same name, Sideways is a clever comedy about wine, life, and a group of friends – each in search of its unique identity. Unlike films based on the lands they traditionally dominate Hollywood, Sideways is one of those rare pictures that actually "reads" like a novel. The movie is like Seinfeld, as it is not something else, but everything goes in the same time. With very little about how the plot, the movie relies heavily on the development of eccentric characters, and this aspect, Sideways is a great success. Some of this film (I can not put my finger on) that I love, and I'm willing to bet that you do not regret it too …
Paul Giamatti plays Miles Raymond, a professor of middle-aged, recently divorced high fight to publish his novel, The Day After Yesterday (which is, of course, "Today" – but this is not the same.) The film opens with Miles takes his college roommate Jack (Thomas Haden Church) for a bounce maiden voyage of a week in the Napa Valley vineyards. In one week left as a single man, Jack is scheduled for a week of drunkenness and debauchery – but Miles is in its path. Suffering from a mild depression, Miles wants to enjoy wine instead of blowing, speaking with a woman instead of sleeping with her, and generally act as a brake on a Jack plans.
But when Jack pushes his friend Miles to go waitress Maya (Virginia Madsen), life takes a turn for Miles. Meanwhile, Jack runs a torrid Maya romance with a friend Stephanie (Sandra Oh), or women who are experiencing impending marriage to Jack. When the truth about Jack's marriage slips, the delicacy threatens to destroy each character's relationship with the other …
Often funny, sometimes deeply symbolic, Sideways runs the gambit of human emotion. In addition, plot no industrial design that serves the purpose of keeping the audience on the edge. You never know what to expect. Thomas Haden Church (Lowell Mather before glory on the wings, one of all time, my favorite comedies) shows his diversity as an actor in his fascinating representation of aggression, the hormone based on Jack. Determined to live a wild week of drunken sexual conquest before his wedding, Jack's behavior is self-destructive frenzy in sharp contrast with the paralysis, low-risk approach for Miles. Together, Haden Church and Giamatti create an unforgettable combination screen.
And it is this mixture of gunpowder relationship between Jack, Miles, Maya and Stephanie attractive flavor film Sideways. Virginia Madsen received his own Oscar nomination to go with Thomas Haden Church, but the Oscar nominations could easily went to Paul Giamatti and Sandra Oh. In summary, Sideways walks in the hills of California wine country and the peaks and valleys of human experience. It is a film about life and the decisions and relationships, happiness and everything else. More importantly, it is one of the most exciting and entertaining films of recent years, and therefore clear that Sideways is a must see this movie …
